What happens when a journalist is forced to immerse himself into a culture that he doesn’t understand for the sake of a story? Chances are, he’ll do a little research online first, then he’ll pop into a local vape store to see what the hullabaloo around vaping is all about.
That’s exactly what happened recently, but unfortunately, the resulting report hasn’t done vapers, vape stores or the local vape scene any favors.
Rokok elektronik perisa ganja / Marijuana flavored electronic cigarettes
Well, the headline kinda says it all.
Apparently, Mr. Journalist found himself in a dodgy vape store who was proudly parading ganja-flavored eliquids, and in true mainstream media fashion, he decided to ditch any and all positive research in favor for a headline which would sell more papers.
Naturally, local vapers started getting offended and called out the reporter:
“He’s working for big tobacco!” some yelled, while others echoed similar sentiments like “what do you expect from mainstream media“. “They hate vaping because they can’t tax us!” was another heavily used line, and “yeah, because of that they want to sabotage us” was a very apt response.
While I do not disagree with these comments, what irks me even more is how no one acknowledged that we wouldn’t be in this shit storm if local brewers didn’t concoct these Mary Jane flavored liquids in the first place.
I’ve been quite vocal about this in the past, and I’ll quickly rehash how I feel in the lines to come:
- The local vape scene, no matter how big it’s reported to be (or to be worth), is still growing. Let’s not even talk about it being close to it’s full potential yet. There are absolutely no regulations surrounding any aspects of vaping in the country, no bylaws and no official stand. This means that the vaping industry as a whole is still in a huge grey area, and that means that everyone from the casual vaper to a store owner or eliquid brewer is in jeopardy of having everything they love about vaping yanked away from them in the blink of an eye.
- Knowing full well how delicate the whole vaping ecosystem currently sits, why would you do anything to jeopardize the entire community in the eyes of the authorities? Why would you continually taunt the general public by vaping in shopping malls or cinemas? Why would you brew ganja flavored eliquids, knowing full well that marijuana is illegal in Malaysia? Why would you give them a reason to shut us down?
As vapers, we are constantly striving to get our hobby, passion, culture and businesses accepted by the mainstream, so why the hell would you do anything to jeopardize that? For a few quick dollars? For street cred?
Think about it. Maybe you are the problem.
With that, I implore you; please don’t fuck this up for us.
If you’re going to brew ganja-flavored, then please for God’s sake be discreet about it.
If you’re going to sell ganja-flavored, then the least you can do is not put it on the rack.
If you’re going to consume ganja-flavored, then do it at home and not in public.
Why would you give them a reason to shut us down?
